I’m fitting the neck to the body before glueing I’m fitting the neck to the body before glueing them together. I used to rely on chalk to “see” where they are touching, but I’ve done this so many times that I don’t use chalk anymore. I’ve seen documentary about Jimmy D’Aquisto making Jim Hall’s guitar and he was fitting a bracing on his archtop and he wasn’t using chalk, just looking at it and fitting them together. This guitar had serious problem: Fingerboard radius was totally messed up, 12" at the nut but then 9.5" at the end of the fingerboard. I hand-planed the fingerboard, corrected the radius, put Jescar super jumbo frets in. Also, refinished the neck with home-made violin varnish. Now, it plays effortlessly with very low action, no fret buzz anywhere on the neck. Tune is called "Nocturne", originally recorded in 1933 by Spike Hughes, famously revisited by one and only, Julian Lage. Neck fitting. Normally, I use chalk to fit things, but simple joint like this, I don’t. I’m just looking at where it’s touching, and removing the wood where touching until everything feels like “locked-in”. Pretty simple. You can hear how tight the the joint is. I can’t fit it this tight if I use chalk, because I’ve found over the years, that chalk gets in the way. No chalk, no joke! Music by : Stan Forebee
